As Nick Kalanzopolous said, “That was the closest 10-5 game I’ve ever played in.”

The Hitmen outlasted Murry Bergtraum after six lead changes, winning at Murry Bergtraum HS Field.

In the top of the first, the Hitmen grabbed an early lead. Tim Diep lead off with a walk and advanced to third on Ben Sydel’s single. Mike Mazzeo got the RBI on a fielder’s choice. But a solo home run by Murry Bergtraum’s Jason Mora Paredes in the bottom half of the inning tied the game 1-1.

The Hitmen grabbed the lead again in the top of the third with back-to-back singles by Junho Han and Tim Diep and a two out single by Mazzeo driving in Han. But Murry Bergtraum again came right back with three in the bottom of the third and added another in the bottom of the fifth.

Alex Mandell started a rally for the Hitmen with a one out single in the top of the sixth, advancing to second on a wild pitch. A single by Kalantzopolous drove Mandell to third and a walk by Diep loaded the bases. Back-to-back singles by Sydel and Gilhooley tied the game at five.

Austin Lee replaced Nathan Chandler in relief to start the bottom of the sixth and walked the first two batters he faced, but he pitched his way out of the jam by retiring the next three batters without giving up any runs.

The Hitmen finally broke the game open in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs when Junpei Taguchi was hit by a pitch, Alex Mandell singled, and Kalantzopolous walked to load the bases. Matthew Cook came in to pinch hit and delivered with a two run single to center field scoring Taguchi and Mandell. The Hitmen added another three runs in the inning.

But it wasn’t quite over for the Hitmen as Murry Bergtraum loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before Austin Lee got the final batter with a strike out.

Mid-season Report

Dear Stuyvesant Parents, Players, and Alumni,

The Junior Varsity Hitmen, led by Coach Brian McCarthy, are off to a great start: with one loss overall, plus a strong showing in their first PSAL game (final score: 18 – 0), this promises to be an exciting season for Stuyvesant! (Click on the JV schedule, above, for times, locations, and maps — and join us at upcoming games!)

Meanwhile, the Varsity Hitmen recently returned from their very successful Florida Spring Training trip (see below for a great post about the trip from our coaches), and are heading into the final two weeks of their season. Coach Carlesi hopes to bring the Hitmen to the playoffs once again — but they will need to win three of the next five games in order to do so. Please come out and support our players as they face Murry Bergtraum, Lab, and rival Beacon High School this week and next. Show your team pride by wearing your FSB caps and t-shirts!

We’ve also been working behind the scenes converting the website to WordPress and updating the game information. Please take some time to look through the game summaries, scores, photos, posts, and other helpful information you’ll find here!

Also, mark your calendars for our beloved community event — the ALUMNI GAME: Saturday, June 21, at 1:30 p.m. , on our home field at Pier 40. Please reach out to your teammates and friends to join us for this opportunity to re-connect and play some great baseball (or cheer from the bleachers). More information and details to follow.

Florida Trip Report

Varsity at Dodgertown
Varsity at Dodgertown

As most of you know, the Hitmen travel to Florida every year for Spring training: the JV goes during Presidents’ week and the Varsity during the Easter/Passover break. This year almost the entire JV team went down for a week full of instruction and inter-squad games. The JV also had a chance to visit the Mets’ spring training facility and get autographs and pictures with the Mets. This is such a crucial week for the younger players because many come to us with tools but not a great knowledge of the game. During that week, we instruct the players on the proper way to play baseball and teach our “Hitmen” philosophy, which is hard work and dedication. The JV team has a surprisingly strong freshman class, complimented by some veteran presence. Our pitching depth is tremendous and we have played good defense so far, with our bats really coming alive as of late. We are 2-0 in league play and are excited to get our PSAL league games in.

The varsity trip was just as successful. We posted a record of 3-4, which doesn’t sound great but we did face teams that use metal bats compared to our wood bats. This year the Hitmen got a treat by playing one of our games at Vero Beach’s famous Dodgertown, which we won against a Western New York high school. This was one of our best trips ever in the 10 years the Hitmen have been going to Florida. The boys all acted in a mature matter and worked very hard to improve their baseball skills. We just wanted to thank the “Seniors” for making this a memorable trip; they will be truly missed next year.

We would also like to thank the FSB board for arranging all the events this year and supporting the Hitmen in every way possible. Without the continued support of FSB and generous alumni donations, we would not have such a successful program at Stuyvesant. This year, donations funded new equipment; access to off-season indoor training facilities; and “Florida scholarships” for players who would be otherwise unable to attend our Florida spring training programs.

Jack Archer and Tobias Lange combined to hold George Washington to just 3 hits, but the Hitmen still fell to George Washington 5-4 on a walk-off triple in the seventh.

Kelvin Tapia pitched the final three innings for GW on the way to a win. He walked none and gave up no hits.

The Hitmen jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. More runs came home for the Hitmen when Ben Sydel scored on a walk by Jack Archer and Max Schneider scored when Alex Mandell was hit by a pitch. GW came back to tie the game with one run in the second and two more in the third. The Hitmen regained the lead in the fourth when Junho Han walked, went on second on Tim Diep’s walk, advanced on a sacrifice by Sydel and scored on a passed ball.
