Fresh faces hold the key to Stuyvesant’s season

Wed. March 17, 2010

John Carlesi is still getting accustomed to life without his seniors. For four years, Nolan Becker, Nick Rozar, Nick Wheatley-Schaller and Zach Karson were always there.

“Those kids were like my adopted sons,” the Stuyvesant baseball coach said.

On the field, Becker will be missed the most. Now at Yale, he was the team’s ace, a fire-balling left-hander, and cleanup hitter. “We have to overcome that,” Carlesi said. “That’s what we told the kids: ‘Nolan’s not here, now you got push yourself and rely on each other.”

That Elusive Perfect Game

Wed. June 24, 2009

Everyone was ready to see the magic happen again. from the players to the coaches to the spectators to the umpires-they were all hoping to see the lightning bolt of an arm that had just produced a perfect game deliver a repeat performance.

Lightning didn't strike twice for nolan becker, the senior lefty from stuyvesant high school. during this game, played earlier this spring in central park, he was facing a top squad in norman thomas, one that sported few weak hitters and went on to win the city championships a couple of weeks ago. but if anyone doubted the kid's talent after he allowed an unearned run in the first inning, they stood corrected a little later. becker got nine strikeouts combined in the second, third and fourth innings. he wasn't flawless, giving up a few walks, but he rose to the occasion whenever the situation was toughest.

The Mound

Local coverage of some interest.

From The Villiager:

Oh oh, there’s another mound problem; at Pier 40

Tue. May 10, 2005

Now a new mound dilemma has erupted over the movable pitching mound being used for baseball on the new Pier 40 courtyard FieldTurf sports field. The mound was used last Thursday for a scrimmage between Stuyvesant and Xavier.

Because the field is multiuse for multiple sports there cannot be a permanent mound as it would limit the flexibility of the field’s use.

HITMEN BREAK THROUGH BARRIER

Wed. May 24, 2000

Stuyvesant climbed a huge mountain yesterday, defeating Alfred E. Smith, 6-3, to move past the first-round in the PSAL playoffs for the first time since the late 1980’s.

The Hitmen (17-8-1, 10-4-1) took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when pitcher Chris Beattie helped his own cause, driving in shortstop Jesse Tucker, who had tripled with two outs.
