The Peglegs came out Tuesday looking to avenge last week’s loss to Beacon and that’s exactly what they did. Behind a strong start by Sam Levine on the mound and an offense that saw nineteen baserunners, Stuy let their game do all the talking in a 12-5 win.  Stuy is now 3-1 and in first place in the PSAL AAA Western Division.

Beacon threatened in the first, loading the bases with two outs, but escaped with just one run on an error. In the third, a double by Iravan Bhattacharyya drove in the Peglegs first run to tie the game. That was as close as Beacon would get.

In the fourth, Stuy loaded the bases with one out. Jeremy Lee drew a walk to drive in the go ahead run. A single by Sophomore Axel Riess followed by a two run single by Levine put Stuy up 5-1.

Beacon threatened again in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with two outs but left them stranded as their batter looked at a called strike three.

The Peglegs piled on in the sixth, drawing three walks and highlighted by a two run single by Paul Liou to go up 11-2. Both teams added runs in the late innings after the outcome was already all but decided.

Coach Carlesi was excited about the win, and a life lesson. “Last Thursday I told the boys that I do not condone any type of violence on or off the field. But I did tell them that I do condone sticking up for themselves and not letting anyone walk all over you. If your opponent sees that they will do it always. Today, they stepped up and took it to them. I am very proud of them. They won as a team and had each other’s back!”

• Levine went five innings for his second win of the season, allowing four hits, one earned run and seven strikeouts.

A furious seventh inning comeback fell just short on Wednesday, as Stuyvesant took their first PSAL loss of the season, going down 6-4 to rival Beacon.

Beacon jumped out to a 4-0 lead early, getting four hits through the first two innings and then taking advantage of Stuy errors, wild pitches and passed balls.

The Peglegs’ bats were quiet through the first five innings, managing four hits while striking out seven times. At the same time, the Beacon bench was getting rowdy and had to be warned by the umpire several times.

Stuy threatened in the sixth, loading the bases in the sixth with one out, but managed to plate just one runner. In the bottom of the seventh, however, down 6-1, it looked as though their fortunes were about to change. Adam Lucey and Peter Carini led off with hits followed by an Ethan Lin walk to load the bases. Lucey scored on a groundout by Axel Riess to bring the game to 6-2. Sam Levine came to the plate and quickly went down 0-2 but fought through seven more pitches before hitting a line drive to right bringing the score to 6-3. Iravan Bhattacharyya drove in another run to close the gap to 6-4. But that was all the Peglegs would manage and Beacon walked away with the win.

“We beat ourselves today,” said Coach Carlesi. “We outhit them but gave them too many free bases.” Stuy gave up seven walks, seven combined passed balls/wild pitches and made four errors. The good news is that, despite all of this they were still in a position to win the game at the end. The Peglegs showed great heart today, refusing to roll over when things got tough.

The teams play again on Tuesday at Central Park.

The Peglegs completed their two-game sweep of the West 50th Street Seahawks on Wednesday afternoon, with a 5-1 victory.

Once again, Stuy got the win behind solid pitching and defense and smart, aggressive baseball. Paul Liou got the start and shut down the Seahawks over 3-1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts. Sam Levine earned the win in relief, taking over in the fourth and shutting out the Seahawks the rest of the way, also allowing just one hit.

West 50th St threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with one out. But Stuy turned a picture perfect 6-4-3 double play by Jeremy Lee to Julian Duran to Ben Harwayne.

The bats were led by Julian Malenda, who had two hits and two runs scored. Ethan Kirschner, Axel Riess and Levine each contributed hits and Iravan Bhattacharyya drove in the first run of the game on a well placed ground ball.

In the field, catcher Adam Lucey threw out two Seahawks attempting to steal second. Liou stayed in the game after pitching and made a long running catch in CF to help Stuy seal the win.

The Peglegs’ opened their PSAL season with a come from behind 4-3 victory over the West 50th Street Seahawks.

Starting pitching Iravan Bhattacharyya went four innings keeping the game close and striking out seven. Ethan Lin got the win with three innings of one-hit scoreless relief. The Seahawks threatened in the last frame, leading off the inning with two baserunners and no outs. But Stuyvesant was determined not to let the game slip away and a strikeout by Lin ended the contest.

Stuy’s offense put three on the board in the fourth, including a clutch bases loaded single by catcher Adam Lucey. The go ahead run in the fourth was sparked by a double by sophomore Axel Riess and was driven in by a base hit by senior co-captain Sam Levine.

The two teams face off again next week.

Stuyvesant suffered it’s first loss of the season, going down to Midwood 9-8. The game had some oddities (a HBP that wasn’t, catcher’s interference) and a lot of sloppiness (errors, walks, missed cutoffs, dropped balls). Still, the Peglegs had multiple chances to win but couldn’t make plays when they needed to.

Sophomore and JV Captain Mantas Kempinas looked good in his first varsity appearance, throwing four innings in relief.

Yesterday, the Peglegs extended their preseason win streak to four with a 9-0 win over Lab Museum United.

Sam Levine got the start and threw five scoreless innings, letting up just one hit to go with seven strikeouts. Ben Harwayne came in to shut the door with two scoreless innings, looking strong on the hill.

Paul Liou, Iravan Bhattacharyya and Brandon Schwartz had hits for the Peglegs. The defense and baserunning continued to be a strength of the Peglegs early this season.
